Harley The Bear

Hi! I'm Walker Wolf, the leader of this new club. I thought you might like to know a little bit about me and how I was chosen to be the leader of The Trail Team.

More than a hundred years ago, my relatives lived almost everywhere. When the settlers came out West, they were afraid we would eat the livestock they brought with them, so they decided to get rid of us. A bounty – money -- was paid for every wolf that was killed.

The truth is that we wolves are very shy. If you go into my den to see my baby pups, I’ll leave and come back when you’re gone.

I live in a pack. My den is on the other side of the hill above Blazer Lake. We have a very ordered community. Every wolf pack is lead by what you humans call an "alpha" wolf. The alpha wolf can be either male or female. I am a male and the strongest wolf in my pack. As an alpha wolf, I can be challenged at any time either by another wolf in the pack, or by a newcomer who wants to take over as the leader. I have to be strong physically and mentally and always make wise choices for the safety and security of my pack. It’s a lot like what your parents do for you. The alpha wolf has special privileges too. Since I have to work very hard at protecting the pack, I get to eat first after the food is caught.

I am called a “predator” because I catch and eat other animals, my “prey.” If I can't catch a rabbit, mouse or another small critter, I’ll eat berries and grasshoppers. It’s like you snacking on fruits and nuts.

I have an important job. I help keep the eco-system in balance, protect my pack, and teach my young pups to make wise choices. I hope you learn to make wise choices too, and grow up to be strong leaders like I am.

My job as The Trail Team leader is to help you understand the rules of the resort. Rules are made for a reason, and it’s important that you know the rules. They help guide you on the right path and keep you safe.

I think we are going to learn a lot together in this new club. I hope you will do your best to follow all the rules, and help keep our environment clean and enjoyable for everyone.
